A job interview usually takes less than an hour. Yet if you only spend one hour on the interview, you’re probably not getting hired. Job interviews require a ton of preparation and follow up to help put your best foot forward throughout the whole process.

Most people know the basics, such as the importance of dressing professionally and carrying a couple extra copies of their resumes. But have you thought about the other things you’ll need to do to prepare?

  • Arrive on time.

You may have forgotten to factor road construction or parking into your travel time. Even better than allowing extra travel time, you can drive to the building a day or two before the interview to get a firsthand feel for the streets in that area.

  • Pack the right materials.

You’ll also want to make sure you pack all the appropriate items and have them organized logically. If you know where everything is located in your portfolio, it’s easy to flip to a specific piece with confidence during the interview.

  • Project a professional image.

Another great way to look professional is to print some personalized pocket folders in which to distribute copies of your resume or samples of your work. This says that you’re willing to go the extra mile for your new job.
