The summer break is always a fun time to hit the beach, hang out with friends, and simply enjoy the warmer weather. However, it also happens to be a great time to make some extra cash and bulk out the resume. If you’re looking for a casual job to keep you going over the summer, it’s a good idea to know what types of roles are available.

Here’s the rundown on some of the top summer jobs you can keep an eye out for:

Freelance Writer

If English has always been your best subject, or you happen to be passionate about a particular subject, consider working as a freelance writer over the summer. Although you may need to start off on low rates or even volunteer your time at local papers or for blogs and other websites, writing can be a fantastic way to build up your way with words, your research skills, and your online knowledge. This is all important experience to have in the tech-driven world. It also makes for great resume fodder.

Retail Assistant

Another popular and readily available job is that of retail sales. From clothing shops or supermarkets, to pharmacies, fruits shops or department stores, there are plenty of different places that look for casual staff members over the summer months. This type of job is fantastic for social people who want to develop their customer service and sales skills. Pay rates can vary according to the duties and level of responsibility involved.

Bartender

Tending bar is a popular choice for summer employment. Although it’s not particularly well paid (unless you manage to charm customers and rake up a lot of tips) it’s perfect if you’re a night owl who likes to be amongst a crowd at night. Work as a bartender and you can enjoy getting paid to mingle, check out strangers, and listen to beats while you’re on the job.

Nanny

Plenty of parents who have kids out of school for the summer months will be searching for a nanny to keep their youngsters safe, well and entertained. If you choose this type of employment, not only can you get paid quite a decent wage, but you can also enjoy reliving your childhood over the summer. Have fun hanging out with kids as you help them to play games, dress up, jump rope and spend time at the park.

Apart from these work opportunities, you can also consider getting a job as a dog walker or groomer, a landscaper, food server, life guard, camp counsellor, tutor, valet or Country Club assistant. To make money completing quick tasks for people in your local area, you can also sign up to Task Rabbit .
