It’s a good time to be looking for work in the construction industry. With demand for workers at record highs, construction workers — even those just starting out — will typically find that they have an array of employment options on the table.

That’s changed the game completely. In other eras, a worker might have to settle for any job that was available. Today, they get to be a lot more selective about which employer they choose to work for.

All too often, construction workers — in fact, most workers — focus on the job’s pay and location, but there can be a lot of value in digging a little deeper and asking a few questions that can give you a much better understanding of what it’ll actually be like to work for them. If you can answer yes to all of the following, then that’s a good sign that they’ll be a valuable employer.

Are They Employee-Owned?

Asking whether the business is employee-owned is often overlooked, but it can make a big difference to your overall experience. When you look for construction jobs with a teammate-owned company, you’re not just working as an employee. You’ll also directly benefit from the success of the business. That’s a positive attribute in itself, but it can also indicate broader company health. Businesses that operate under this model tend to be more stable and long-term minded, which can give you confidence that you’ll have a chance to genuinely grow while there. And talking of growth….

Do They Believe In Career Growth?

Many construction companies will say that they’re invested in their employee’s growth and development, but there’s a big difference between saying it and actually doing it. If a company is vague when asked about the growth opportunities they provide to their employees, then that’s a red flag. Good construction companies have a genuine interest in helping their employees be the best that they can, including providing pathways towards more senior roles. 

Do They Offer Perks and Benefits?

Working in the construction industry can be tough, but the best companies make sure that their employees are well-looked-after. It’s not just about paying well, but offering additional perks and benefits. If they provide competitive health benefits, open vacation and family leave, and even provide sabbaticals after a certain number of years of service, then that’s a good trust signal that they genuinely want to look after their employees.

Do They Have a Positive Impact?

This is another question that’s often overlooked. A construction company might look great from the outside, but if they don’t appear to be interested in having any kind of wider positive impact in the community, then that’s a red flag. Good companies understand the importance of giving back. They’re good companies to work for because not only does it mean that you’ll have the chance to make an impact, but it can also indicate that they’ll treat you well — community-focused employers tend to have good housekeeping in which everyone feels valued and a part of the team.
