Choosing to pursue a career in law means that you aren’t choosing the easy route. Straight from the start, this means that if you are the kind of person that does not hold a deep interest in helping people to overcome adversity in their lives, you likely will not find a career in dealing with other people’s problems all too rewarding. Remember, a job isn’t a just job, it’s something you have to get out of bed and drive to work and actually do every day of your career until you retire. That’s why it’s worth taking the time to ensure that you make the right decision.

Who you are as a person?

If you are a family-oriented person, with a strong sense of wanting to get involved to offer insight and direction that can lead to a desirable outcome, family law may be the right career choice for you. Likewise, if you feel that people who have suffered the injustice of a psychological or physical injury as the result of the actions taken by someone in a position of authority, criminal injury law or medical malpractice might be the right choice. With the roads more congested than ever before, you could have strong feelings about bringing negligent drivers to justice (read more about this type of claim from this hit and run lawyer based in LA). Whatever you choose, make sure you research your selected area of law and review all of the character traits that are likely to match up to a lasting career in that particular field.

You will be paid in more than just money

When someone approaches a lawyer, in need of legal know-how and in need of instructions that can resolve a potentially drastic situation, it’s because they’ve already exhausted all other options (nobody calls a law firm at the first hint of a problem, only when things have developed to a point where they are out of control). This means that you are being entrusted with the short term happiness of the client and their family, as well as perhaps their medium term and long term well-being. When you win the case, the emotional payoff of knowing your actions have brought justice to the lives of others is the kind of rare feeling you don’t normally get to experience in everyday life (the gratitude from your clients may even become a bit embarrassing).
