Why is Good Accounting Important for Small Business

You probably didn’t start your business because you enjoy dealing with accounts, lets face it most people don’t. It’s easy to push it aside because there’s always something else demanding attention, usually in small business it’s just you and maybe one or two others helping so there’s always a lot to do. The days are usually full even when you’re burning the candle at both ends and working all the hours that you can, so it’s no wonder that things can slip sometimes. But it really shouldn’t be your accounting, it can land you in a heap of trouble and make things incredibly stressful. Here’s what you need to know about why it’s important.

Taxes

Taxes are the part that everyone tries not to think about until they absolutely have to, but that’s usually where problems start. If you leave it all until the deadline you’ll more than likeloy end up scrambling around trying to remember what was spent where, digging through emails and bank statements and hoping you have what you need. It’s so stressful and it can take over your time until it’s done, and that’s even before HMRC decides they want a closer look at things. When your accounting is up to date then taxes are just another job to do and not a full blown crisis. You know what needs paying and when, and you’re not guessing or hoping for the best. It’s so much better to deal with this regularly than to let it build into something unpleasant that hangs over everything else. Even if you have an accountant if you hand them all of your documents and everythings in a mess it will take them more time and cost you more, so an accountant isn’t your get out of jail free card when it comes to this.

Saving time

There’s a strange idea that doing everything yourself is somehow a badge of honour when it comes to small businesses, but in reality it just makes life harder. When it comes down to it, you only have so many hours in the day and if you do things right the first time you’ll save yourself hours of hassle later on, which can be put to use doing better things. Even having a simple system, having accounting software in place or getting someone to help once a month can make a huge difference. It doesn’t mean the business is too big for you, it means you’re being smart about your time.

Knowing what you can affordEventually, ‘winging it’ just stops working if you’ve been getting away with this so far. You might be toying with the idea of hiring a freelancer or upgrading your gear, or maybe even renting a studio, but those decisions will feel much more huge when you’re flying blind. When your numbers are actually organised then, that weight is lifted and you can make informed decisions and can see what’s realistic. It’s not about having perfect spreadsheets; it’s about making your next move with confidence because you know exactly what your business can handle.
